Design for crew table

The Brief

Langford Fire Rescue (LFR) approached us to help renovate their common area by building a number of main and side tables, most notably an 8 foot by 8 foot crew table. One of their main expectations for the final pieces was that they should last for a minimum of 10 years, and we took this to heart.

The deliverables were: 2 coffee tables, 3 side tables and 1 crew table. Jordan began by experimenting with materials, talking to the crew and learning how they wanted to use these new pieces so we could provide the best options. Meanwhile, John was drawing up design variations that incorporated the hands on and industrial nature of firetrucks and halls. Our goal was to create tables that would last for at least a decade, becoming not just furniture but integral parts of the team.

Right from the beginning of the project, we brainstormed how we could make these tables unique, asking ourselves what we could incorporate into the design that would make it distinctive to the fire department. After agreeing with the LFR upon solid oak and steel as our material foundations, we incorporated "firetruck" red bolts into the legs of the crew table. We wanted a clear allusion to the fire hall without being extravagant or taking away from the beauty of the solid oak tops.
