Hold the remote, I'll be right back...

preliminary sketch of side table

The Brief

After unsuccessfully searching the market, these clients approached us with the brief of creating a functional side table that would fit precisely with their low-lying sofa. It should be versatile enough to hold remotes, phones, magazines and beyond, and of course look good doing it all.

We began by sketching several concepts, passing these back and forth with the client until a general direction was agreed upon. We then built a 3D model to better visualize the piece in space and work out the final design kinks. Finally, we built 2 prototypes, experimenting with several joinery methods, the shape and feeling of the top pockets, and different methods for achieving the "grooves" that are so central to the design.

These clients already had a keen aesthetic vision, having decorated their space with a number of design elements that we were hoping to incorporate into the side table. Most prominent were several light fixtures that made bold use of lines. We took inspiration from this, and added open grooves to the curves on the table to create a "linear" effect. This not only elevated the overall design by making it feel lighter, but tied our piece into the rest of the residence.
